Tips on how to clean and maintain your stone countertops to keep them looking great for years to come.

Stone Countertop Care

Stone countertops are a beautiful and durable addition to any home, but they require proper care and maintenance to keep them looking their best for years to come. Whether you have granite, marble, or quartz countertops, following these simple stone countertop care tips can help you preserve their natural beauty and extend their lifespan.

Clean up spills immediately

Stone countertops are susceptible to stains, especially if they are porous. To prevent permanent damage, it’s important to wipe up spills as soon as they happen. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to blot the area gently. Avoid using abrasive materials or cleaners that contain acid, bleach, or ammonia, as they can damage the stone’s surface.

Use a mild cleaner

To clean your stone countertops on a daily basis, use a mild cleaner that is specifically designed for natural stone. You can find these cleaners at most hardware stores or online. Avoid using any harsh chemicals, as they can dull or etch the stone’s surface over time. Instead, opt for a cleaner that is pH-neutral and gentle on the stone.

Seal your countertops regularly

Sealing your countertops can help prevent stains and protect the stone’s surface from damage. How often you need to seal your countertops will depend on the type of stone you have and how often it is used. As a general rule, it’s a good idea to seal your countertops every one to three years. To determine if your countertops need to be sealed, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads up, your countertops are still sealed. If it absorbs into the stone, it’s time to reseal.

Use coasters and cutting boards

To prevent scratches and chips, always use coasters and cutting boards on your stone countertops. Avoid placing hot pots or pans directly on the surface, as extreme temperature changes can cause the stone to crack or discolor. Certain stones are more heat, scratch, or chip resistant than others, but it’s a good idea to be cautious either way. Talk to one of our experts if you’re worried about wear and tear and we can recommend the best material for you.

Stone countertop care doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. By following these simple tips, you can keep your countertops looking beautiful and protect them from damage for years to come. With a little bit of care and attention, your stone countertops will continue to be a source of pride and beauty in your home.
