When it comes to choosing a countertop people expect to make decisions about color, pattern, and edge type. Did you know that for quartz countertops you also have to think about countertop thickness? To make this decision we’ll take a look at the area, style, and how the countertop will be used.
Tips for Choosing Countertop Thickness
The first step is to look at what’s available. We offer quartz slabs between 1-3cm thick. Our partner, Cambria, has just come up with an innovative 6mm style for several of their designs as well. Be sure to ask one of our experts about what thicknesses are available in the colors/patterns you like.
Next, think about the room you’re working in. Quartz can be installed in many different places, which means different levels of use. If you’re installing countertops in the kitchen you may want to choose a thicker slab. That way it’s more durable and can hold up to such a high traffic area. If you’re looking to install a bathroom countertop then a 2cm slab should be fine. If you’re using quartz as a backsplash or statement piece go for the 6mm – 1cm countertop thickness. This allows you to install the material without worrying about supporting as much weight.
Another factor to consider is edge style. Some look better when used on a thicker countertop while others look best on a thinner edge. Decorative styles tend to look better on a 2cm countertop. However, if you like a bold custom edge the 3cm thickness would make it pop more.
Keep in mind that countertop cost is directly related to its size. This is true for length, width, AND thickness. A 3cm top may give you the look that you love, but it will increase the cost of your project.
